Title: Introduction to Bayesian VAR estimation in Stata



The use of the Bayesian approach for regression analysis is spreading more across different disciplines. The possibility to incorporate a priori information in the form of probability distributions for the parameters of the model makes this approach highly appealing when the researcher has that knowledge. Bayesian vector autoregressive models (BVAR) are particularly attractive because the overparameterization present in many VAR models can be handled by using prior probability distributions that allow shrinking the parameter space. In this presentation, I will briefly highlight the general elements associated with Bayesian VAR models, and I will use a couple of examples to illustrate the way Stata implements the estimation for the parameters of a VAR model using the Bayesian approach and how we can get probabilities for events that combine levels for the different endogenous variables of the model.

El uso del enfoque bayesiano para el análisis de regresión se ha ha ido extendiendo en diferentes disciplinas. La posibilidad de incorporar información a priori a través de distribuciones de probabilidad para los parámetros del modelo hace que este enfoque sea muy atractivo cuando el investigador tiene ese conocimiento acerca de los parámetros. Los modelos de vectores autorregresivos bayesianos (BVAR) son particularmente convenientes porque la sobreparametrización presente en muchos modelos VAR puede ser manejada mediante el uso de distribuciones de probabilidad a priori que permiten reducir el espacio de parámetros. En esta presentación, destacaré brevemente los aspectos generales asociados a los modelos VAR bayesianos, y usaré un par de ejemplos para ilustrar la forma en que Stata implementa la estimación de los parámetros para un modelo VAR utilizando el enfoque bayesiano, y la manera en que podemos estimar probabilidades para eventos que combinan niveles de las diferentes variables endógenas del modelo.
